Dortmund - the “Heart of Westphalia”... Again, the city is undergoing fundamental changes. Ever since it was first mentioned in the year 882, Dortmund has had a chequered history - from an unassuming small town to a medieval crossroads, to an imperial seat and a powerful member of the Hanseatic League. The Thirty Years´ War cast Dortmund back into mediocrity. This period was followed by a hundred years of industrial growth which has now also come to an end. In a new and united Europe, Dortmund has once again become conscious of its past and has come to see its central location and its excellent traffic connections by water, air, road and rail as true assets. Communication and communications technology determine both the present and the future. Nevertheless, the city has been able to preserve those inherent qualities that give it its special charm and sense of diversity - its vast green spaces between the Sauerland and the Münsterland, its parks, woods and fields, its urban character and the rural charm of its suburbs. Added to this is the vast cultural variety on offer to the 600.000 inhabitants of this Westphalian metropolis.
